Come to Dunedin!

Introducing Dunedin, famously known for its notorious student life and beautiful historic buildings. My name is Hana and I’m a student studying Neuroscience at the BEST university in New Zealand, Otago.

Dunedin is a city full of hidden gems, breath-taking beaches, and also a host to some awesome events throughout the year that you don’t want to miss! With countless tourist and local attractions that cater for everyone, Dunedin is home to many (university students in particular). The student vibe in the city is nothing like you’ve ever experienced before! But no matter who you are, Dunedin has a place for everyone, so come along and I’ll give you a local tour of this beautiful city.

Events

Being a student-orientated city, the Dunedin calendar is always looking pretty busy! From amazing productions put on at the Regent Theatre or the famous Otago O-Week events, there is always something to come along to.

The more notable events are the cultural food fare (July), university productions such as the Capping Show (May), and The Vogel Street party (October).

The cultural food fare is where people of different cultures/different ethnic backgrounds come together and celebrate their heritage. A pot-luck style event with each person bringing something different to the table. This event is great for anyone who loves meeting new people and celebrating different cultures.

The Capping show is something you don’t want to miss! If you’re like me and love having a good laugh with your friends, this is the event for you. OUSA hosts a student directed comedic production that’s guaranteed to have you in fits of laughter the whole night! The production happens every night for one week every year in March.

The Vogel Street Party is a Dunedin favourite, it is a family-friendly event that also has a party-like atmosphere. It strives to celebrate everything us locals love about Dunedin. This event is a great way to experience some awesome local talent and to learn more about the great city of Dunedin.

Activities

There are so many fun things to see and do in Dunedin, although we might not be the biggest city in New Zealand, we have some of the most amazing sceneries and tourist attractions.

If you’re into nature, beaches, and appreciate beautiful scenery, Tunnel Beach is the place to go. Only a short walk to get there and the reward of the most beautiful secluded beach. Another notable beach and St. Clair Beach, which is only a 15-minute drive from the city. Signal Hill is also a favourite, with a panoramic view of Dunedin that can be enjoyed during the day or at night to see the city lights come to life.

Dunedin also offers many other different fun activities such as the botanical gardens, Shopping on George street, visiting the Famous Otago Clock tower, walking up Baldwin street, taking photos at the old historic railway station and so much more!

Accommodation

Otago has many different types of accommodation to suit your style of travel whether you are backpacking or splashing out. On Top Backpackers is a popular and highly recommended place to stay for those travelling on a budget! Located right in the heart of Dunedin, it’s the perfect place to stay for exploring the city.

If you’re looking for a family-friendly, quiet and cosy place to stay, waking up and grabbing a coffee, and taking a stroll on the beach, Hotel St. Clair is perfect! A 15-minute drive from the busy city, Hotel St Clair allows you to wake up to a beautiful beachy sunrise.

No matter what you’re looking for, there will always be a place to stay that will leave you well rested and satisfied with your stay in Dunedin.

There is so much to love about Dunedin; its atmosphere, history, scenery, and more! The time of your life awaits in Dunedin, so what are you waiting for?
